Jules Matton

A graduate of the Juilliard School of Music (New York), Jules Matton studied under John Corigliano (Oscar winner in 1999 for Best Original Score), who praised him as “a remarkable talent with impeccable technique.”

Alongside his studies in philosophy, he has received several distinctions: the Marcel Bleustein-Blanchet Foundation for Vocation (2010), the Institut Catholique de Paris Excellence Scholarship (2013), the Banque Populaire Foundation (2015), the Île-de-Créations Competition (2017), the Grand Prix Lycéen des Compositeurs (2019), and the Bartók World Competition (2023).

His collaborations include artists such as Jodie Devos, Bruno Philippe, Thomas Dunford, Anastasia Kobekina, Kotaro Fukuma, Justin Taylor, Frank Braley, Paul Meyer, the Quatuor Hermès, the Trio Zadig, and Catherine Trottmann, as well as orchestras including the Orchestre National d’Île-de-France, the Orchestre National de Lyon, the Orchestre de Picardie, the Orchestre de l’Opéra de Toulon, and the Æon Music Ensemble. His work spans a wide range — from solo piano to large orchestra, including chamber opera and string quartet.

Also active as an improvisational pianist, he manages the Estate of his father, Charles Matton, a painter and sculptor. In 2023, he published his first novel, Gaspard, with Éditions Léo Scheer. The following year, he composed the score for Nora Jaenicke’s feature film Island, starring Fanny Ardant and Joanna Kulig, as well as part of the soundtrack for Vincent Perez’s Une affaire d’honneur.

Currently, Jules Matton is completing his second novel, composing a piano trio and a string quartet on private commission, as well as an immersive opera based on The Divine Comedy (directed by his brother, Léonard Matton), which will premiere in October 2027. He is also preparing a piano chamber music album scheduled for release in winter 2026–2027.
